Better Audio.
Any RAV4.
The Toyota RAV4 is New Zealand's best-selling SUV for good reason. The factory audio is not one of them. Whether your RAV4 came with the standard six-speaker setup or the JBL system on higher grades, the result is the same — a system that sounds adequate and nothing more. We've worked on the full RAV4 range across multiple generations, from straightforward upgrades to complete rebuilds. We know what each generation needs and exactly how to do it.
GX, GXL
The entry and mid-grade RAV4 — six speakers, no brand name, no subwoofer. The most common RAV4 configuration on NZ roads and the most straightforward to upgrade. All three systems are available and the improvement from even System One is immediately obvious. A clean signal chain with no premium audio integration to work around.
Limited, premium grades
The JBL-equipped RAV4 — nine speakers, A-pillar tweeters, and a subwoofer in the left rear corner of the boot. Better than the standard system. Still significantly limited by factory amplification. The JBL badge is the starting point, not the destination. A DSP amplifier transforms what the existing hardware is capable of — or we can go further and replace the system entirely. We've done both.
Gen 3, Gen 4 & earlier
Older RAV4s — the third and fourth generation models that are still common on NZ roads. Earlier models offer a simpler signal chain and in many cases a more accessible head unit. All are fully upgradeable. The upgrade approach varies by year and spec — contact us to discuss what's involved for your specific vehicle.

- High-fidelity tweeter and crossover upgrade
- Amplifier for subwoofer and front speakers
- Sound deadening — front doors
- Power kit, cables and minor parts
- Installation and calibration
System One works with your factory speakers and adds the two things every RAV4 is missing — proper bass and amplification. A compact subwoofer hidden under the rear seat or in the cargo area fills the low-frequency range the factory system can't produce. For standard six-speaker RAV4s, this alone is a dramatic improvement. For JBL-equipped models, it replaces or supplements a factory subwoofer that simply doesn't perform to the level the branding implies. Sound deadening in the front doors reduces the road noise that competes with the audio at motorway speeds, and lets the factory speakers perform as designed. The factory head unit, CarPlay, and all factory controls remain exactly as before.

Full Control.
Every Speaker.
The DSP unlocks what the factory amplifier never could.
Tailored quote — contact us- Compact subwoofer — underseat or underfloor cargo area
- High-fidelity tweeter and crossover upgrade
- Multichannel DSP amplifier with app control
- Full individual speaker timing, phase and EQ calibration
- Sound deadening — front doors
- Power kit, cables and minor parts
- Installation and calibration
System Two adds a multichannel DSP amplifier — the single most significant upgrade available for any RAV4 regardless of factory audio spec. The DSP takes the signal from the factory head unit and processes it independently for every speaker in the vehicle. Timing, phase, and equalisation are corrected channel by channel — giving us control the factory system was never designed to allow. For JBL-equipped RAV4s, this is where the branded hardware finally gets what it needs. For standard-spec models, this is where the system stops sounding like a factory radio and starts sounding like a proper listening environment. Everything is adjustable via Bluetooth app. Nothing is visible. The factory interface is unchanged.

- Sound deadening — doors, floor, sidewalls and tailgate (full treatment)
- Power kit, cables and minor parts

The complete build. Every element of the RAV4's audio system addressed — speakers, subwoofer, amplification, signal processing, and acoustic treatment — selected and calibrated specifically for the vehicle and the owner. We've done this. A full RAV4 build — ADSP amplifier, front component speakers, new subwoofer under the rear cargo floor, and full sound deadening across the doors, floor, sidewalls, and tailgate. It's a significant job. The result is a completely different vehicle to listen to. Front component speakers replace the factory drivers. The subwoofer is positioned under the rear cargo floor — out of sight, out of the way, properly enclosed. Sound deadening goes wherever it needs to go to give the system the acoustic environment it deserves. The DSP is calibrated by ear before you leave. For JBL-equipped RAV4s, we can work with the existing JBL hardware where it's capable, or replace it entirely. We've done both.

Rapid Radio has been installing and calibrating car audio systems in Auckland for over two decades. We work across the full spectrum — from everyday EVs through to Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Tesla — with every build calibrated by ear to the vehicle and the owner. No compromise installs. Factory-clean finish. Every time.
No two builds are the same — and that's the point.
Because the DSP is the engine of every upgrade, the hardware around it is entirely flexible. Entry-level speaker sets will sound dramatically better than the factory system — and world-class reference components will do things the factory engineers never imagined. We work across the full range, from practical upgrades to reference builds, and every system is calibrated by ear before you leave.

Can you upgrade the audio in any RAV4?
Yes — all RAV4 generations are fully upgradeable. Current and recent models use a DSP amplifier approach that works with the factory head unit. Older models may have additional options including head unit replacement. All three system levels are available regardless of grade or factory audio configuration.
My RAV4 has the JBL system — is it worth upgrading?
Yes — and this is one of the strongest upgrade cases in the RAV4 range. The JBL hardware is a genuine step up from the standard system. The factory amplification behind it is not — it's constrained by the same integrated head unit limitations as every other RAV4 grade. A DSP amplifier gives the JBL system the power and independent control it was designed for. We can also go further and replace the system entirely — speakers, subwoofer, and all. We've done it.
How much does a RAV4 audio upgrade cost in New Zealand?
Pricing depends on the model, generation, factory audio configuration, and system level. Contact us for a quote specific to your RAV4.
Can you change the head unit in a RAV4?
It depends on the year and grade of your RAV4. On models up to and including some 2019 variants, yes — and where possible we'd recommend it. A replacement head unit gives you wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, a cleaner signal chain, and a better overall result. On many 2019 and later models, the head unit is usually integrated into the vehicle's systems and isn't practically replaceable — the DSP amplifier approach is the correct path and delivers excellent results. Contact us with your specific year, grade, and build date and we'll tell you exactly what's achievable.
Where does the subwoofer go in a RAV4?
Under the rear seat or under the rear cargo floor — both are clean, invisible installations with no impact on boot space or the vehicle's practicality. The cargo floor option is preferred for System Three builds where a larger, properly enclosed subwoofer is part of the brief.
Will the upgrade affect my RAV4's warranty?
In most cases, no. All installations are reversible — no permanent modifications, everything can be returned to factory condition. We recommend confirming with your Toyota dealer if you're within the warranty period.
How long does a RAV4 audio upgrade take?
System One is typically a one-day installation. System Two usually takes one to two days. System Three with full acoustic treatment and calibration by ear is generally two to three days depending on the scope of the build.
Can you add full sound deadening to a RAV4?
Yes — and it's one of the most rewarding builds we do. Full acoustic treatment across the doors, floor, sidewalls, and tailgate makes a dramatic difference in a five-door SUV at motorway speeds. The audio system performs significantly better in a properly deadened cabin. It's available as part of System Three or as a standalone addition to any system level.
