Premium Car Audio — New Zealand

Better Audio.
Any BYD.

You made a smart choice with a BYD. Saved on fuel, got the tech, probably spent less than you expected for what you got. Now spend a little of that saving on the one thing the factory didn't prioritise. The audio in every BYD — from the Atto 1 to the Sealion 8 — can be significantly improved. Whether yours came with four speakers or twenty-one, the factory system is tuned to be acceptable. We tune it to be exceptional.

Worth knowing

BYD fits a wide range of audio systems across its range — from basic four-speaker setups through to Dynaudio-branded 12-speaker systems in the Seal, Sealion 7, and Shark 6. The number of speakers isn't the point. You still only have two ears. What matters is how well the system is controlled, amplified, and calibrated — and that's where every BYD has room to improve, regardless of spec level.

Standard Factory Audio

4–8 speakers, no audio brand

The Atto 1, Atto 2 Dynamic, Sealion 5 Essential, and Seal 6 Touring all leave the factory with a basic unnamed speaker system. Four to eight drivers, no premium brand, no DSP. These are the most straightforward BYDs to upgrade — clean signal chain, no proprietary amplification to work around, and the improvement from even System One is immediately obvious.

Branded Mid-Tier Audio

Dirac HD Sound, HD Sound, Infinity

The Atto 3 (Dirac HD Sound, 8 speakers), Sealion 5 Premium (HD Sound, 9 speakers), and Sealion 6 (Infinity, 10 speakers) sit in the middle tier — BYD's way of saying the audio is better than basic without committing to a truly premium system. The hardware is reasonable. The amplification and DSP control behind it is not. All three respond very well to a proper multichannel DSP upgrade.

Dynaudio & Premium Integrated

Seal, Sealion 7, Shark 6, Sealion 8

The Seal, Sealion 7, and Shark 6 come with Dynaudio-branded systems — 11 or 12 speakers depending on the model. The Dynaudio speaker componentry is technically very good. The factory amplification driving it is not — it's underpowered for what the speakers are capable of. A 12-channel DSP amplifier transforms these systems completely. The Sealion 8 takes a different approach: 10 speakers on Dynamic variants, 21 on the Premium AWD. Twenty-one speakers with a premium badge, but still no control. More speakers isn't better sound — proper amplification and calibration is.

All current BYD New Zealand models are four-door configurations and receive full front and rear door treatment at System Three level. Subwoofer placement varies by model — most accommodate a compact underseat or underfloor installation without affecting cabin or boot space. The Shark 6 has specific placement considerations given its ute configuration; contact us to discuss your specific vehicle.

  • Compact underseat subwoofer
  • High-fidelity tweeter and crossover upgrade
  • Amplifier front speakers
  • Power kit, cables and minor parts
  • Installation and calibration

System One works with your factory speakers and adds the two things every BYD is missing — bass and proper amplification. A compact subwoofer hidden under a seat fills in the low-frequency range the factory speakers can't produce. A high-fidelity tweeter upgrade lifts the sound to ear level, adding width and the upper frequency detail the factory units compromise. The factory head unit stays in place. Nothing visible changes. For BYDs with basic 4–8 speaker systems, the improvement is dramatic. For Dynaudio-equipped models, it's the starting point for something considerably better.

  • Compact underseat subwoofer
  • High-fidelity tweeter and crossover upgrade
  • Multichannel DSP amplifier
  • Full individual speaker timing, phase and EQ calibration
  • Sound deadening — front doors
  • Power kit, cables and minor parts
  • Installation and calibration

System Two adds a multichannel DSP amplifier — the single biggest improvement available for any BYD with a branded audio system. The DSP takes the signal from the BYD's factory head unit and processes it independently for every speaker in the system. Timing, phase, and equalisation are corrected channel by channel. For Dynaudio-equipped models in particular, this is where the factory hardware finally gets the amplification it was designed for. The improvement in volume, clarity, and control is significant — and it's all adjustable via app. Sound deadening in the front doors reduces the road and wind noise that competes with the music at motorway speeds.

  • Full individual speaker timing, phase and EQ calibration
  • Compact subwoofer — underseat or underfloor
  • Sound deadening — all four doors
  • Power kit, cables and minor parts
  • Installation and calibration by ear

The complete build. Every element of the audio system addressed — speakers, subwoofer, amplification, and acoustic treatment — calibrated specifically for the vehicle and the owner. Front component speakers replace the factory drivers. Rear speakers are upgraded or amplified. The multichannel DSP processor gives us independent 30-band EQ control over every driver in the system. The subwoofer — compact and hidden — is tuned to complement the full range rather than dominate it. Sound deadening goes into all four doors. For Dynaudio-equipped BYDs, this is the build that makes the factory hardware perform the way it was always capable of. For the Sealion 8 with 21 factory speakers — this is where we make sense of all of them.

New Zealand's car audio specialists.

Rapid Radio has been installing and calibrating car audio systems in Auckland for over two decades. We work across the full spectrum — from everyday EVs through to Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Tesla — with every build calibrated by ear to the vehicle and the owner. No compromise installs. Factory-clean finish. Every time.

No two builds are the same — and that's the point.

Because the DSP is the engine of every upgrade, the hardware around it is entirely flexible. Entry-level speaker sets will sound dramatically better than the factory system — and world-class reference components will do things the factory engineers never imagined. We work across the full range, from practical upgrades to reference builds, and every system is calibrated by ear before you leave.

Can you upgrade the audio in any BYD?

Yes — all current BYD models are fully upgradeable across all three systems. This includes the Atto 1, Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 5, Sealion 6, Seal, Sealion 7, Sealion 8, Seal 6 Touring, and Shark 6. Every factory audio configuration — from four speakers to twenty-one — has a clear upgrade path.

My BYD has Dynaudio — is it worth upgrading?

Yes — and this is actually one of the strongest upgrade cases in the entire BYD range. The Dynaudio hardware in the Seal, Sealion 7, and Shark 6 is technically very good. The factory amplification driving it is not — it's underpowered for what those speakers are capable of. A multichannel DSP amplifier gives the Dynaudio system the power and control it needs. The improvement in volume, clarity, and bass response is significant. We've done it. It's impressive.

My BYD has 21 speakers — surely that's already good?

More speakers doesn't mean better sound — it means more places for the same sound to come from. You still only have two ears. The Sealion 8 Premium's 21-speaker system has no premium audio brand behind it, which tells you everything about the priority. Proper DSP amplification and calibration will do more for how that system sounds than doubling the speaker count ever could.

How much does a BYD audio upgrade cost?

Pricing depends on the model, factory audio configuration, and system level chosen. Contact us for a quote specific to your BYD.

Most BYD models accommodate a compact subwoofer under a front or rear seat — clean, invisible, no impact on boot space. The Shark 6 has specific placement options given its ute configuration. We'll confirm the best location when we discuss your specific vehicle.

Where does the subwoofer go in a BYD?

Will a BYD software update affect the upgrade?

No. Our upgrades connect to the factory signal and run entirely on independent hardware. BYD's OTA updates affect the head unit and vehicle software — not the amplifier, DSP processor, or speakers we install. The upgrade is unaffected regardless of what BYD pushes.

How long does a BYD audio upgrade take?

System One is typically a one-day installation. System Two usually takes one to two days. System Three with full DSP calibration by ear is generally two days depending on the model.

Can you add radar detection to a BYD?

Yes — radar and laser detection packages are available alongside any audio system. Portable or fully installed stealth options available. Contact us to discuss the best approach for your vehicle.
